A HIGH-FLYING couple from Biggin Hill are celebrating success in the world of Taekwon-Do.
Lisa and Chris Pitman - already dubbed “the world’s strongest couple” after setting a record for breaking 1,000 roof tiles - have just returned from a whirlwind trip to China.
There, Lisa, 43, achieved her 7th Dan black belt to become the first female Master in England, and only the second in the UK. On the same trip, husband Chris, 47, was awarded his 2nd Dan.
“What a mad achievement,” said Lisa. “It was pretty awesome.”
The pair live in Swievelands Road and run Virtue Taekwon-Do, which has over 500 students aged 3-56 years from all over Bromley borough.
After a difficult childhood, Lisa overcame the odds to get her business off the ground in 1999. At that time she juggled multiple jobs and would struggle to make a profit from her classes.
Success followed and, in May 2001, Lisa, by then a third-degree black belt, was chosen to represent England at the World Championships in Rimini, Italy. She came home with two silver medals and, when word of her achievement spread, her class sizes tripled.
Lisa continued with her international competing and became a seven-time European champion in power breaking. In 2011, she travelled to New Zealand to compete at the world championships. There, she won gold to become world champion in power breaking, and silver in sparring.
Her last competition saw Lisa win gold for power breaking at the world cup in Brighton 2012.
The couple’s next challenge is to set a world record for breaking pine boards. Their various adventures have already seen them appear on Britain’s Got Talent, breakfast TV and Blue Peter.
